Worship Services

Upon arrival, you will be warmly greeted by our congregation volunteers. If you have special needs during the service such as mobility issues, or if you need headphones for a hearing problem, please let one of our greeters or ushers know so that we can accommodate you. The Saturday evening service is generally smaller and is celebrated in our Chapel on the lower level of the church. Please enter through the side door off the parking lot to attend that service. The Sunday service is traditional. If you have children, we offer Christian Education classes (Sept-May). A Nursery and Crib Room is available year 'round. Attire for our services is generally "business casual," although some people wear their "Sunday Best" and some come in jeans: all are welcome! Each week, we have a Visitor's Table at the rear of the Sanctuary that is staffed by members of our Welcoming Committee who can answer any questions you may have. Pick up a "Visitor's Packet" and a copy of our current newsletter. The Welcoming Committee will also be happy to give you a tour of the church facilities.

History of Olmsted Community Church

The First Congregational Church of Olmsted was organized April 16th, 1835, when 18 men and women met at the home of Chauncy and Nancy Meade.  Most of them had come to the Western Reserve from New England, and when the congregation began to build a Church building in 1848, it was in the New England Meeting House style.  It was 1852 before the building on the east side of Columbia Road was finished.  That same year the Methodists in town who had organized as a congregation in 1843 built their Church across the road.

Both small congregations struggled through the years, and sometimes held combined services alternating Sundays in each building.  By 1916, the idea of a permanent federation had been accepted by both congregations.  January of 1917 saw the adoption of Articles Governing the Federation of the Methodist and Congregational Churches of Olmsted Falls, Ohio, an almost entirely new idea in American Protestantism.

At first, new members joined the Church as Methodists or Congregationalists, but denominational lines faded away as years went by.  Church services were held in the former Methodist Church (now the Grand Pacific Junction Wedding Chapel) and the Congregational building became a Sunday School and a meeting place for many town activities.  This building was called the Community House and was torn down for the city-Church parking lot.

On May 24, 1923, we officially became chartered as Olmsted Community Church. When the sanctuary was constructed, The Reverends Mapes and Norenberg said:

"Today a dream has become a reality, and we share the sense of fulfillment and the thrill which are in the hearts of all who have had a part in building this house of worship."

During the 1950’s, the Community Church’s dramatic growth mirrored the upsurge of Church membership nationally.  A Christian Education wing was dedicated in 1956, and in 1960, on March 20th the present sanctuary was dedicated.

Our 50th Anniversary: 1973

We celebrated the 50th anniversary of Olmsted Community Church in 1973. The Reverend Walker said:

"It would be no disservice to the Christian cause and there would be no lack of gratitude to the charter members of this Community Church if we dedicated this history of these last fifty years of the Olmsted Community Church to the next fifty years since we hope, we pray, and we believe that in the Providence of God this Church we have loved and served will go from strength to strength in the worship and service of Jesus Christ, our Master and Lord."

Our Church Today: 2007

Since then, we have discovered that this house of worship is in faith and practice the people of God, more than the building. We also continue to discover in so many significant ways what it means to go from strength to strength in the worship and service of Jesus Christ. We have received the inheritance of an ongoing vision to build a Church which practices unprecedented enthusiasm in religious tolerance and Christian service.

While the Church presently maintains close ties with the United Church of Christ, it remains an interdenominational fellowship ministering to the needs of all Protestants.  Through the years people of various denominational backgrounds have been able to worship and work together.

Currently, Olmsted Community Church has a membership of more than 500 members.

The mission of any church is to be a steward of grace and mercy to the people of God. Our purpose is to invite all God’s people into the Sacramental presence of Christ and to extend this stewardship to all the world. We believe that together we can accomplish Christ’s mission and with each other we can affirm the presence of the Holy Spirit in and among us. Diversity of being, inclusiveness in community, and faithfulness in our actions is the character of our Church. Together we are strengthened " To Be Christ to the World".
